BIM information

What decision is this model data for?

A useful information requirement begins with the output someone needs to trust.

BIM information

Start from the receiving decision

Ask who will use the information and what they need to do with it. Quantity reviews, asset handovers and design coordination exercises may require different attributes and levels of detail. Avoid requesting fields merely because a template contains them. An unused attribute still creates work to populate, check and maintain.

Define meaning as well as format

Agree naming, units, classification, responsibility and the point at which a value is expected to be reliable. Distinguish a design allowance from a verified installed value. A model can contain complete-looking fields while different teams interpret them differently. A small data dictionary often makes these differences easier to resolve.

Test the whole extraction route

Use a representative model sample to test export, transformation and the final report. Check whether the receiving tool preserves the relevant IDs, units and relationships. Review exceptions and document how they will be handled. A successful model entry is not enough if the information becomes ambiguous or incomplete when it reaches its intended user.

Bring it to the next conversation.

  • Name the user and intended decision.
  • Agree a shared meaning for the fields.
  • Check a sample through the final report.
